What is a Biomass Boiler?

A biomass boiler is similar to the standard gas and oil boilers you find in most residential properties. Biomass boilers are fuelled by solid biomass rather than oil or gas. A biomass boiler is larger in size than a conventional boiler and does require more maintenance.

Biomass boilers work by burning biological matter they then transfer the heat they produce for use in your heating system. Wood pellets, wood chips and logs are placed into the combustion chamber and are ignited.

The heat generated by this process travels through a flue and is transferred through a heat exchanger, this process, in turn, transfers the heat to the water used in your homes central heating system.

Any excess heat is stored in a thermal tank often called a buffer vessel. Biomass is a biological material that comes from plant-based organisms or plants. When it comes to domestic boilers, the natural material is usually pellets, wood logs or wood chips.

Most conventional boilers burn fossil fuels like oil and gas to produce heat. The process of using oil or gas will emit carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. This process is one of the leading causes of the problem of global warming.

Burning wood is a carbon-neutral process; it only produces the same amount of carbon dioxide as the tree absorbed during the time it was growing, so it cancels itself out. While a standard boiler burns gas or oil, a biomass boiler burns the wood chips, wood logs or pellets so the boiler can heat the water that supplies your taps and radiators.

Every year, in the United Kingdom, approximately 8.5 million tonnes of waste wood goes into landfill, this wood could easily be converted into pellets and burned in wood-burning stoves or used in biomass boilers. Not only would this process provide heat and hot water, but it would also take the pressure off landfill capacity. Biomass boilers are far more efficient to run than a conventional gas boiler.

Unless the flue from the system exceeds the height of your roof by more than a metre, it is doubtful you will need planning permission. However, it is always worth checking with your installer beforehand. If you live in a listed property, you should check with your local planning authority in case consent is required. You should always adhere to any building regulations. Our team at Greenables Ltd will give you all the information you need.

How much does it cost to install a biomass boiler?

The government have a Domestic Renewable Heat Incentive scheme. It is a government financial incentive to promote the use of renewable heat.

You should be eligible for payments towards the cost of installing the technology required for your home to use renewable heat. The payments you receive are made to you every quarter, for seven years for the amount of green renewable clean heat it is estimated your system will produce.

You will have an Energy Performance Certificate survey for your payments to be calculated. It means that some models will eventually be paid for entirely by RHI ( Renewable Heat Incentive) payments.

You will still have to pay for the cost of the technology upfront, and exactly how much funding you receive will depend on how energy efficient your property was before the installation of a biomass boiler.  The cost of a smaller sized domestic biomass boiler starts at £5,000, a commercial installation aimed to heat more than two buildings can cost approximately £20,000.

The cost of a biomass boiler will vary depending on the needs of your household. Even though the price of wood fuel varies, it is often far cheaper than other heating options. Biomass boilers and stoves should be kept clean and regularly swept to remove the ash.

What are the pros and cons of biomass?

Biomass fuels are renewable fuels. The carbon dioxide they produce when burning is offset by the carbon dioxide they absorbed as trees while they were growing.

The savings made in carbon dioxide emissions are incredibly significant. Almost 9.5 tonnes per year is saved when a wood boiler replaces a solid fired system like coal or electric storage heating. Biomass fuel is about 40% cheaper than LPG or oil fuels.

You can also earn Renewable Heat Incentive payments. In the majority of cases, the combination of Renewable Heat Incentive payments the savings you make on your heating bills could potentially wipe out completely your heating bills.

The wood pellet fuel supply is very sustainable and rarely subject to price increases unlike other fuels like gas, oil and coal. Biomass Boilers are carbon-neutral, which make them ideal for the reduction of a carbon tax. You don't have to be connected to utilities so if you are looking for an off-grid solution, a Biomass Boiler is perfect.

Biomass Boilers are expensive to install compared to gas-fired boilers. You would need to invest in your biomass boiler to enable you to reap substantial financial rewards. Any Renewable Heat Incentive payments you receive are likely to cover the costs of your investment. These payments are paid every three months over seven years. In the majority of cases, your investment in a biomass boiler will pay for itself.

Space for the storage of your fuel is required. You will need to invest in a wood store if you don't have an appropriate building already. These are just a few of the advantages and disadvantages of having a biomass heating system.

Our team at Greenables Ltd will be happy to discuss these with you.

Are Biomass Boilers Cheaper to Run?

Usually, biomass boilers are a more economical option compared to other heating systems like gas-fired or oil-fired ones.

Biomass Boilers are better in terms of the environmental impact, fuel costs and funding options.

In terms of the average cost of fuel, the approximate price of wood pellets is about 4.2p/kWh which is roughly in line with a mains gas supply. The oil will cost a little more at 6p/kWh. However, considering the price of wood pellets is likely to become far more attractive due to the price of gas continuing to rise, as it has done in recent years. It doesn't appear that the cost of gas is likely to reduce.

Biomass boilers are entirely independent of the import costs of foreign fuels like oil and gas; the prices for these imported fuels fluctuate considerably.

If you have either an endless or free supply of wood, it's entirely possible you could heat your home at zero costs to yourself.

The majority of the wood chips used for heating in UK homes are sourced in the United Kingdom. Logwood is a source of energy that is relatively stable on cost. Wood logs and other types of wooden fuel are usually the first choices for those of us who are very conscientious of their environmental impact.

Wood pellets are found to be the most common type of biomass fuel for domestic properties. Wood pellets are usually packed and delivered in bulk or bags.  If you buy wood pellets in larger quantities all at once, it can work out to be much cheaper than if you buy them as and when you require them.
